Anthropocene Science - Call for Papers " Social-ecological Systems (SES): Building Resilience to Address Multiple Stressors"

Understanding the intricate relationships among the components of ecosystems and social systems, which interact with each other, leads to the evolution of social-ecological systems (SES). The role and contributions of SES have emerged as a core area in sustainability science. Maintaining a balanced equilibrium among the components of SES through sustainable knowledge, practices, and policies is essential for achieving global environment and development targets, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate change action, and biodiversity conservation targets.

Increasingly, it has been recognized that the sustainability of SES is exposed to a set of stressors characterized by climate change, ecological, socio-economic, institutional, and policy factors, collectively referred to as multiple stressors. The compounded impacts of these stressors pose a much greater risk to SES than their individual effects. Understanding how these stressors shape risks and how their impacts can be moderated through different knowledge systems, practices, technologies, policies, and institutional perspectives is crucial. This is especially important for agrarian societies that are particularly vulnerable to these stressors.

In this context, we have planned to edit a special issue of Anthropocene Science on "Social-Ecological Systems (SES): Building Resilience to Address Multiple Stressors." This issue aims to present evolving knowledge and approaches, adaptation strategies, local to global case studies, and enabling science and policies that contribute to understanding and shaping global environmental sustainability initiatives.

Topics for this special may include, but not limited to:

  • Approaches and methodological advances in understanding the intricacies among components of SES
  • Knowledge systems and adaptive strategies for devising and shaping resilient pathways for SES
  • Socio-economic, cultural and institutional dimensions of biodiversity conservation and/ or natural resources management approaches to achieve resilient SES The role of traditional ecological knowledge and community institutions in building resilient SES
  • Case studies and success stories from regional to global scales science and policy dimensions on SES
  • Livelihood resilience in the face of multiple stressors affecting vulnerable SES
  • Institutional innovations for developing capacities to enhance SES resilience
  • Multi-stakeholder perspectives on developing integrated solutions for SES resilience
  • Progress on global environmental policies (SDGs, climate actions, biodiversity conservation, etc.) in building resilient SES

Keywords: Multiple stressors, social-ecological systems, resilience, capacities, livelihood portfolio, biodiversity and natural resources management, sustainability, knowledge and practices, and inclusive policies
