Abstract
This article describes the historical development of the concept of quality of life and its measurement in oncology. Thus, it presents the definitions associated with the concept of quality of life, followed by a section on the emergence and evolution of this concept in oncology and another one which outlines the factors that contributed to the emergence of the concept of quality of life. The last section focuses on the measurement of quality of life and its evolution. The article concludes that the concept of quality of life today is defined as Patient-Reported Outcomes and that the notions of quality of life, health-related quality of life and health status have different connotations. In addition, it reports that the dimensions selected to describe and evaluate the quality of life of cancer patients are still not yet approved unanimously among researchers. Finally, the article identifies three methods for assessing quality of life, each with advantages and disadvantages.
