Summary
Professional learning beyond organized continuing training — What do teachers do in comparison to other professions
Lifelong Learning has become a major issue in educational debates, not only with regard to pupils but relating to teachers as well. This article treats the issue of teacher learning, which is conceived of as being more than just the participation in single further education workshops or courses. In contrast, it is argued that informal forms of professional learning are key to continuous knowledge and skill development in professions. Using a secondary analysis of representative survey data, the article explores the questions of whether and how teachers use different informal learning opportunities (e.g. reading professional literature, collaborating with colleagues). Other professionals (medical doctors, lawyers and engineers) are used as reference groups in order to compare teachers’ engagement in informal learning to the learning activities of professions for which a similar need to continually update professional knowledge can be expected.
