Abstract
The helium-tritium method is an excellent tool for dating groundwater. This method is based on analysis of radioactive hydrogen (tritium, 3H) and its decay product helium-3 ( 3 He). The paper discusses advantages and disadvantages of the method. The methodological emphasis is on the separation of tritiogenic 3 He from additional 3 He sources. The method is compared to the classical dating of groundwater with 3 H concentrations only. Results of an application example are given for an aquifer in the Oderbruch. The aquifer is recharged by bank-filtration and water samples were dated along the infiltration path up to a distance of 5 km from the infiltration source (river Oder). The age of the groundwater increases from a few months to more than 40 years along the flow path. In addition, radiogenic 4 He accumulates in the groundwater. Locally, recharge through the unsaturated zone could be identified in the central polder. The age dating results are compared to conventional hydraulic and hydrochemical investigations and confirm them.
