Abstract

The pseudo-phase dispersion model gave the basis for the invention of ionic surfactant with a bivalent counterion applicable in hard water on one hand, and for the discovery of infinitely aggregated micelle, i.e., surfactant phase on the other hand. In earlier days, surfactants soluble in water or oil were the focus of interest, but presently, a surfactant balanced with hydrophile lipophile operties is the center of attention. With such balance the surfactant is practically insoluble in water and hydrocarbon. But, the solubility of water or oil in surfactant phase becomes infinitely large and normal or inversed micelles are formed, provided the HLB of the surfactant is slightly changed to hydrophilic or lipophilic.

Micellar dispersion, surfactant phase separation ans reversed micellar dispersion are inclusively discussed based on the concept of the relative dissolution of water and oil in surfactant phase. Solubilization of oil (or water) in micelle (or reversed micelle) and surfactant phase is also inclusively understood as the solubility in speudo-surfactant phase and surfactant phase. The oil-water interfacial tension passes through minimum when the hydrophile lipophile property of surfactant just balances for a given oil and water. The relations among the interfacial tensions, the types of oils, the amount of cosurfactant, temperatuyre etc. are elucidated.
