Abstract
Since the publication of John Witthoft’s important article on the manufacture and evolution of gunflints, there have been a number of useful additions to the literature that improve the understanding of this interesting item of technology.
The present paper is an effort to refine the typology and dating of 17th century gunflints and to suggest some alternative notions about the origins of certain types.
