Summary
Since the number of people suffering from pollen allergy had remarkably increased during the last decades, allergologists, politicians and meteorologists in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) established an information system for pollen allergics. During spring and summer 1981/82, a pilot project was started with three pollen traps in NRW. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued the predictions of pollen intensity, the regional broadcasting services and a few newspapers presented the information to the public. After the project’s successful start, the „Stiftung Deutscher Polleninformationsdienst (PID)“ was founded in summer 1983. Members of the PID were the Ministries of Health of NRW and of the Federal Republic of Germany, experienced allergologists, health insurances, the DWD and the drug company Fisons. Actually, the PID manages 60 pollen traps in Germany, carefully controls the measurements, which are available for interested allergologists, and guarantees a daily pollen prediction by the DWD. The PID also trains the analysts of the pollen traps. This service is of great help for pollen allergics and physicians, enabling them to find the precise dose of medication, to avoid sickness days and to help keep down the costs by a well-aimed symptomatic treatment.
