Abstract
The aim of the paper is to survey various attempts (especially in the German literature) to use the concept of fundamental (universal resp. central) ideas as a tool for organizing mathematics teaching and research in mathematics education. Therefore this survey may be seen as a historical reflection on mathematical didactics but should be useful as well for subsequent research.
