Abstract
The general aim of the present study is to reconstruct sex-related methods of acting used by teachers and students in the mathematics classroom. The findings show that the interaction is not coloured by the sex of the participants over many periods. Phases however, in which the basic structure of the interaction is altered, are arranged differently according to the sex of the participating students. This is due to the fact that certain routines of the teachers are modified according to the sex of the students they interact with and the fact that girls and boys have specific ways of acting of their own. In summary boys are more familiar with those methods which enable students to participate successfully in the mathematics classroom. Therefore boys appear to be more competent in mathematics than girls.
