Abstract
Risk for prolonged disability investigated with the Vragenlijst ArbeidsReïntegratie (Return-to-Work Questionnaire)
The ‘Vragenlijst ArbeidsReïntegratie’ (VAR) (Return-to-Work Questionnaire) is a new, empirically based instrument to assess psychosocial risk factors for prolonged disability. The starting point of the VAR is that this instrument should be usable in a heterogeneous population of employees that are disabled from work for different health complaints. The VAR consists of 78 items, distributed over 8 scales: ‘distress’, ‘perceived disability’, ‘job strain’, ‘control’, ‘job dissatisfaction’, ‘avoidance/insecurity’, ‘perfectionism’, and ‘stressful home situation’. The VAR is based upon a model wherein the emotional distress and subjective disability are hypothesized to directly prolong the disability. The other determinants influence the emotional distress, but are not supposed to be directly associated with the absenteeism. In this article, the results are presented of a study on the predictive value of the VAR. The VAR was administered in a group of 83 disabled employees because of non-specific complaints. For 1 year, the return-to-work data were gathered, specified in the amount of days it took to achieve the first step in work resumption, and the amount of days it took to achieve a complete return-to-work. The presence of a chronic disease, emotional distress and the length of the symptoms appear to prolong the absenteeism. The prediction of the absenteeism is improved if the scale ‘perceived disability’ is included.
