Summary
The atmospheric radiation balance is dominated by water vapour, clouds, and trace substances. Gases emitted into the atmosphere through the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as industrial activity increase the greenhouse effect of the atmosphere, thus starting a warming of the lower atmosphere and at the earth's surface. This warming could amount to 1.5–4.5°C in the global mean as early as 2030.
After presenting the questions asked, all the anticipated anthropogenic climate changes are listed, and then also the natural fluctuations of climate are discussed. The latter are as yet hampering a definite proof of an already beginning warming trend.
After examining error sources in climate forecasts by using numerical models, the concentration trends of the most important trace gases are compiled, their radiation effects touched, and the influence of air chemistry on climate mentioned.
The impact of strongly different energy use scenarios on atmospheric carbon dioxide content finally points to the uncertainty in energy policy and also shows the broad range of reaction, left to mankind.
