Abstract
An investigation of the acoustic emission (AE) generated during the deformation of pure poly-crystalline alpha-titanium rod has been carried out. The goals of the investigation were to characterize the AE produced during deformation and identify the specific deformation processes responsible for the measured AE. The AE was found to depend on sample orientation, mode of testing, strain rate, test temperature, and purity. In all cases twinning and/or the initiation of dislocation slip processes were found to be the principal sources of acoustic emission.
