Abstract
Nonradial diffuse streaks and complex diffuse scattering patterns occurring in β-phase Cu-Al-Ni(DO3) and Cu-Zn(B2) alloys have been systematically studied in detail using transmission electron diffraction. As a consequence, the presence of intense rel «110» β* rods has been confirmed unambiguously, in addition to weak «111» β* rel walls arising from the Honjo effect. It was found that all the complex diffuse patterns could be explained on the basis of the intersections of the observed rel rods with the Ewald sphere. From the direction of the rel rods and conditions for their extinction it is concluded that they originate from the presence of a low frequency transverse acoustic phonon mode,\(\left\langle {110} \right\rangle *\left\langle {\bar 110} \right\rangle \). Since identical results were obtained for both the Cu-Al-Ni and Cu-Zn alloys it appears that such effects may be generally characteristic of ordered β-phase alloys. The relation between the diffuse rel rods and the known martensitic transformations in these alloys is also considered.
