Abstract
Seasonal influence on wound effects were investigated on 20 beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) which were wounded with a borer in early October, December, February and April. The wound reactions on xylem and cambium were analysed, also in relation to crown vitality, cambial electrical resistance, moisture content and width of annual rings. The reactions are quite different according to the time of wounding: Wounds effected in April lead only to marginal cambial necrosis around the wound and exhibit good callus growth as compared to wounding during the dormant season. The extension of discoloration emanating from the wounds increases by 30% (December) and even 100% (February), respectively, as compared to April and October. The time of wounding has thus considerable influence on the possible woundhealing.
