Summary
With the thermal decomposition of wood, the most different chemical reactions occur simultaneously, only part of which could so far be explained. Based on literature, a survey of the present stand of research work is given. The first part deals with the influence of temperature, duration of heating, and surrounding medium on the course of decomposition. The results of differential-thermoanalytical investigations are discussed in detail. The method of the differential-thermo analysis (DTA) is particularly well adapted to gain a survey of the course of thermal decomposition. It is, however, true that the DTA curves of wood and wood components so far present are partly greatly deviating, so that further investigations are required. In the second part, the chemical process of decomposition and the occurring derivatves are dealt with. Of the different wood components, only cellulose has so far been investigated in greater detail, whereas relatively little is known about the chemical reactions occurring when lignin and hemicellulose are heated. As primary product of decomposition of cellulose, mainly levoglucosan is found from which a yield up to 66% is obtained. Most of the other substances found in the wood distillate should probably be secondary products of decomposition.
