Abstract
The Romanche valley, between Vizille and Séchilienne (Isère), is prone to a huge landslide in the area known as «Les Ruines de Séchilienne». This movement is located on the southern side of the Mont-Sec mountain and it threatens the highway from Grenoble to Briançon (RN 91). Following its reactivation during the 1984–85 winter and spring there is a distinct possibility of a rockfall occurring in the short term, involving about two to three million cubic metres. There was a risk that such a fall could partially destroy the bed of the Romanche river and cut the highway. In 1986, the road was diverted and a channel excavated to divert the river in the event of it being naturally dammed by the rockfall. Geological and geotechnical follow-up studies indicated that this instability affects most of the rocky slope, up to the crest and mobilizes a volume of some ten million cubic metres. Consequently, there is still a major risk of a huge rockfall which could possibly dam the valley. The present paper, alter summarising the data drawn from geological surveys and monitoring studies proposes a kinematic model which best fits the site.
