Summary
The regions studied are the Western Betic Cordillera (province of Málaga) and the zone of Cogollos Vega NE of Granada. The corridor of Vélez Rubio in the Eastern Betic Cordillera is equivalent regarding literature studies. The Malagides, outcropping over nearly 350 km in length, represent the development of a continental margin of the Atlantic type from the basal Viséan to postlower Bashkirian times. The succession can be subdivided into the Almogía Formation (Retamares Member: Viséan to Lower Namurian; overlying Olive Shales: Lower Namurian to post-lower Bashkirian) and the Marbella Formation (post-lower Bashkirian). The Retamares Member, 40–60 m thick, consists mainly of greywackes with intercalated conglomerate lenses and Devonian limestone slip blocks. It is interpreted as a braided suprafan deposit at the base of a continental slope. The overlying Olive Shales, up to 150 m thick, represent a primarily pelitic slope facies. The diverse conglomerate associations of the Marbella Formation were deposited in submarine canyons.
The conglomerates within the Retamares Member consist of polymictic, well-rounded and well-sorted clast-supported pebbles with an average diameter of 5 cm. The main components are gneisses, quartzes and quartzites. Greywackes, shales, cherts and limestones are subordinate components. The conglomerates form ungraded, poorly bedded lenses, several meters to several tens of meters thick. In Fuengirola-Carvajal only, these conglomerates are underlain by a sequence of four debris flows with the same component spectrum as in the other conglomerates.
The limestone boulders of the Retamares Member are of Upper Givetian to Uppermost Viséan/Lowermost Namurian age. A gap in the lower do I is assumed to represent a break in sedimentation. Limestone boulders give an incomplete record of Lower Carboniferous times, except for the Upper Viséan. Therefore, one can assume that a chert sedimentation took place at least at certain times.
The limestone boulders of Upper Givetian to early Upper Viséan age characterize a pelagic sedimentation in a deeper marine environment. Nine microfacies types can be distinguished. Biomicrites with different pelagic fossils (styliolines,-only in the Upper Givetian and in thegigas-Zone, radiolaria, entomozoans and filaments,-probably larval stages of bivalves or brachiopods, gastropods and ammonoids) dominate the normal pelagic sedimentation. Allochthonous carbonate influx in the form of microbio-clastic packstones, pelmatozoan-biomicrudites and monomictic breccias of entomozoanbiomicrites provide evidence of a subdivision of the sedimentary realm into basin and intrabasinal swells and the existence of a shallow-water shelf edge. The rare Upper Viséan limestone pebbles of the Retamares Member are analogous in age and microfacies to the limestone boulders of the Marbella Formation. Signs of freshwater diagenesis point to an elevation of all the limestones before erosion took place in Lowest Namurian times.
At Arroyo de la Cruz, W of Marbella, an allochthonous limestone slide block was encountered in the Retamares Member. It shows a stratigraphic succession of middle do I to lower do II β (Lowergigas-zone torhomboidea-zone). The microfacies are comparable with those of the pelagic limestone pebbles of the Retamares Member. Probably the slide block originated from the SE.
The Marbella Formation, present only locally, forms lensshaped outcrops. Incised into the top of the Olive Shales, it consists of structurally and texturally different conglomerate lenses, mostly with erosional contacts to one another. The most conspicious feature is the simultaneous existence of angular limestone blocks, up to several meters in size and of well-rounded, polymictic, non-carbonate boulders up to 30 cm in size (cherts, quartzes, quartzites, gneisses, granites, basic vulcanic rocks). This indicates two source areas. The lower part of the Marbella Formation is characterized by oligomictic, ungraded and unstratified limestone conglomerates with large limestone blocks. The components float within a sandy matrix either densely packed or totally isolated within. They are interpreted as debris flow sediments. In the upper part of the Marbella Formation, limestone boulders become scarcer; dimensions of pebbles decrease; conglomerates without limestones and greywacke beds are intercalated. Greywacke-breccias and distorted shales were formed by slumping. The a-axes of the boulders are oriented N-S in the Western Betic Cordillera and NW-SE in the zone of Cogollos Vega.
The limestone boulders of the Marbella Formation are of Upper Viséan (V3b, foraminiferal zone 15) to basal Bashkirian age (foraminiferal zone 20). Zone 19 is not documented. Reworked boulders of the Retamares Member are known from one locality.
The limestone boulders of late Viséan times and of the Viséan/Namurian transition derive from a very differentiated shallow water shelf with a terrestrial hinterland. A large number of laterally intergrading microfacies types enable the shelf and its habitats to be reconstructed from the slope (facies belt 4 of WILSON) to restricted shelf areas (facies belt 8).
The shelf slope (facies belt 4) is characterized by resedimented carbonates like polygenetic limestone-breccias and pelmatozoan-intrasparites containing reworked shallow marine components. The well-washed and well-sorted shelf edge sands contain a highly diverse fauna and flora dominated by calcareous algae, foraminifers, solitary and colonial tetracorals and large spined brachiopods. The open shelf lagoon (facies belt 7) is subdivided into anouter, central, and inner part. The outer shelf lagoon is characterized by sediments rich in grapestones and/or bioclasts. As in the shelf-edge sands, foraminifers are highly diverse. Bryozoan-pelmatozoan meadows are widely distributed. The central part of the open shelf lagoon is characterized by biomicrites with some nektonic organisms and bioclasts deriving from the outer shelf lagoon. The inner shelf lagoon contains sediments with a varying degree of winnowing. Agglutinated peloids and bindstone structures are common. The diverse, often sparse fauna is characterized by heterocorals and certain foraminifers (Tuberitinids,Saccaminopsis, Howchinia); the algal flora has only a few species. The restricted shelf (facies belt 8) can be recognized by sediments with rare organisms; stenohaline organisms are missing. Carbonate mud is trapped by cyanobacteria. Oosparites with radially structured ooids point to hypersaline environments; loferites to inter- to supratidal conditions. Bafflestones and bindstones formed by algae are distributed all over the shelf.
Basel Namurian to basal Bashkirian times are not well documented. The microfacies reflect lagoonal and hypersaline conditions, very probably caused by a regression at the base of the Namurian. Features of fresh-water diagenesis and tectonic strain point to an elevation of the rocks after lower Bashkirian times and before erosion.
In the Western Betic Cordillera gneissic pebbles dominate in the Retamares Member; granitic pebbles in the younger Marbella Formation. This points to the intrusion of Early Variscic granitic rocks and is an indication of orogenetic movements in the non-sedimentary hinterland of the Malaguides. The high percentage of metamorphic rocks in the Marbella Formation of the zone of Cogollos Vega and of the corridor of Vélez Rubio is probably a local effect.
The synthesized stratigraphic and facies development of the source area of the boulders and its faunal content is not comparable to the known Paleozoic realms of the Western Mediterranean (fragments of the Alboran block, Variscides of Southern Spain, Variscides of the Moroccan Meseta, basins of the northern Sahara). Therefore, the source area of the boulders, supposed to be S of the Malaguides, seems to have been totally eroded or subducted.
