Summary
Organic petrological and sedimentological studies were performed on four complete cores of the Posidoniashale (Toarcian) from Northwest-Germany, showing vitrinite reflectance values (Rm) of 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1.45%, respectively. At 0,7% Rm, the dominant macerals alginite and bituminite are morphologically well preserved, although geochemical analyses indicate that they have already generated and lost large amounts of oil. At 0.9%, hydrocarbon generation ist almost complete, and the primary macerals are replaced by secondary, weakly fluorescing meta-alginites. In these cores and those where vitrinite has a reflectance of 1.45%, bedding-parallel cleats occur which are filled with calcite and/or solid bitumen and which are between 1 μm and 1 cm thick. They may have been created by a volume expansion due to hydrocarbon generation and served as migration paths.
The oil shale was deposited as a mixture of clastic terrestrial and planctonic marine particles in a stratified sea which was always anoxic at the sediment-water interface.
