Summary
An occurrance of quartz keratophyre near Diez in the southwestern Lahn syncline (southern Rhenish Mountains) can be shown to represent an emerging, isolated volcano fringed by a reef. This volcano was situated on a submarine ridge formed by originally basaltic, mostly pyroclastic rocks (‘Schalstein’) of Givetian age. In this particular case a fringing reef surrounded a part of a volcanic island formed by felsic lavas and pyroclastics. There the interaction of reef building, coastal erosion, and volcanic activities produced a complex set of facies. It can be shown that lava did flow directly into the carbonate mud thus proving the contemporaneous occurrence of felsic volcanism and reef growth. For several times reef growth flourished during inactivity of the volcano and died from being covered by felsic pyroclastics. After felsic volcanism ceased the remnants of the reef-fringed island were drowned, probably caused by compaction of the under-lying ridge, and renewal of the basic pyroclastic volcanism covered the whole area with its products again.
