Summary
The Givetian to Frasnian Elbingerode Complex, situated in the Harz area (Germany), corresponds to an atoll-like reef formed by corals and stromatoporoids on a group of submarine volcanoes. Circularly arranged stratovolcanoes enclosed a central lagoon containing up to 600 m of Givetian backreef limestones. Three of the four volcanoes were surrounded by fringing reefs; one of them remained permanently in a deeper water position.
Limestone sedimentation and reef growth were controlled by differential synsedimentary subsidence of blocks and by eustatic sea-level fluctuations.
Differences in the depositional pattern and in the location of the depocenters of the carbonate production and the reef growth characterize a pre-phase, a main phase and a subsequent phase (post-phase) of carbonate sedimentation. The main phase is subdivided into three stages: (1) atoll stage, (2) cap stage and (3) demergence stage (oscillating drowning). Each stage is characterized by a special paleogeographical pattern. Reef growth is discontinuous; the main production areas shifted over time. Shallow and deeper-marine environments are documented by a variety of lithofacies types.
The oldest limestones of the pre-phase are of lowermost Givetian age (ensensis zone) and were formed prior to the last volcanic activity.
The main phase of the reef development started after the termination of the volcanism in the Givetian (middlevarcus zone). The reef growth is not continuous in time, it ranges up to thelinguiformis zone of the uppermost Frasnian. The termination of the reef development in the Elbingerode Complex is connected with the Kellwasser event corresponding to the global extinction of most reefs during this time.
Famennian and Tournaisian pelagic carbonates of the subsequent phase are only preserved in relicts and within neptunian dykes of a deeper-water ridge. Mixed conodont faunas occur in dykes formed predominantly between thepostera zone and the Tornaisian/Viséan boundary (anchoralislatus zone). The dykes were formed by volcanic activity and block movements. This activity is related to the last initial volcanism in the Rhenohercynian region. The deposition of Viséan flysch terminated the sedimentation in the Elbingerode Complex.
Location and amount of the carbonate production during the main phase were strongly controlled by synsedimentary block movements. Gaps in the sedimentation correspond in time to bioevents.
The Givetian atoll stage ranges from the middlevarcus up to thedisparilis zone (Maenioceras andPharciceras zones). Massive detrital forereef limestones as well as bedded lagoonal sediments exhibiting a variety of facies types prevail. The lagoonal carbonates are characterized by a rapid change of shallow0marine subtidal, intertidal and supratidal environments. The great thickness of the lagoonal sediments (up to 600 m) is explained by oscillating subsidence of the underlying central block. In addition pelagites and sediments of the reef core occur together with stromatolites characterized by variously coloured and regularly spaced micritic laminations.
The Frasnian cap stage of the Elbingerode Complex includes reef growth phase during theasymmetricus zone (biostromes with autochthonous reefbuilders) and during theAnc. triangularis zone (characterized by the dominance of reef detritus and by the formation of the Rübeland mud mound). The mud mound consists of alternating bioclastic wackestones rich in pelagic biota and of microbial mudstones.
The demergence stage is characterized by an oscillating drowning of the Elbingerode Complex starting during the uppergigas zone of the Frasnian, followed by the extinction of the reefs during thelinguiformis zone and, in places, by the deposition of brachiopod carbonates of the middlePa. triangularis zone of the Famennian.
The subsequent phase of the Famennian/Tournaisian is represented by a great variety of deep-water limestones. A unique sediment type is a graded arenite composed of calcite crystals and containing a mixed conodont fauna and pelites (‘endoturbidites’). This sediment type might be caused by the deposition of carbonate in solution caves and fissures which were leached by hydrothermal activity in connection with the last volcanism in the Elbingerode area.
