Summary
It is assumed that Darwin's principle translates into optimal regimes of operation along metabolical pathways in a biological system. Fitness is then defined in terms of the distance of a given individual's thermodynamic parameters from their optimal values. The method is illustrated testing maximum power as a criterion of merit satisfied in ATP synthesis.
