Summary
Like other Physostomi,Phoxinus lævis reacts to artificial pressure decrease by giving off gas bubbles from the swimbladder through the air duct («Gasspuck-reflex»). This reaction is partly released byproprioceptive stimuli (extension of the swimbladder), partly byexteroceptive stimulation (passive upward displacement). Concerning the first category of stimuli it has been stated that pressure perception in the labyrinth—connected with the swimbladder by the Weberian ossicles—plays a part at minor pressure decreases. For the rest, direct perception of the swimbladder extension is shown to be of great importance. In the latter case probably sensible nerve endings in the wall of the swimbladder are stimulated.
