Summary
425 measurements carried out in the shallow tidal waters near the island of Neuwerk in the mouth of the river Elbe are compared with theoretical results especially of Sverdrup and Munk. It is stated that in these shallow waters the wave velocity depends not only on the wave length and (in minor degree) on the depth of the water, but also on the steepness of the waves and on the wind velocity, increasing steepness being combined with decrease of wave velocity, increasing wind velocity however causing increase of wave velocity. On the whole there is a good agreement between the results derived from the author's measurements and the interrelation between the steepness and the age of waves found by Sverdrup and Munk and the theoretical dependency of wave dimensions on the fetch.
