Conclusions

There is a type of urinary incontinence in women, with no manifest injury to the bladder, which is due to an impairment of the function of the sphincter muscle at the internal orifice of the urethra. It is most common among multiparæ in the fourth decade.

The operation as performed by Kelly is the most satisfactory thus far suggested for this type of incontinence. Entire control is given in a large percentage of cases by means of a mechanical restoration of the sphincter area at the vesical neck. Operation may be under local or general anæsthesia.
