Summary
A method is described for quantitative evaluation of photophobotactic sensivity in Cyanophyceae. The phobotactic action ofPhormidium uncinatum was measured after 8 hours illumination of white or monochromatic light. The density of aggregations was determined by means of a chromatometer.
In white light the zero threshold is at 0.1 lux and the reaction optimum at 5000 lux, whereas the maximum, i.e. region of indifference, is not reached at 50000 lux. The phobotactic sensivity decreases after preillumination with high light intensities.
The action spectrum of photophobotaxis was determined by means of an interference filter monochromator system for the range between 317 and 800 nm using a constant energy of 5000 erg/cm2·sec. The results were compared with absorption curves of pigmentsin vitro andin vivo.
The main maximun between 550 and 560 nm coincides with the absorption maxima of C-phycoerythrin and B(C)-phycoerythrin. The second maximum at about 670 nm and the small peak at 430 nm are comparable with peaks of chlorophyll a. The participation of carotenoids in photophobotaxis is not clearly established. The phycobilins and chlorophyll a are not as active as the light absorption would suggest, but in good correlation with the photosynthetic efficiency of the absorbed light quality. UV has only little influence.
These data show that photophobotaxis ofPhormidium uncinatum may based on photosynthetic processes.
