Summary
InTetragonia expansa the phloem of the small vascular bundles of the leaves has been investigated electron microscopically after careful preparation. The following results were obtained:
-
1.
Within the sieve tubes many plastids occur which contain a dense ringshaped inclusion with a less dense center. Similar plastids has been described already inBeta vulgaris (Esau 1934,McGivern 1957).
-
2.
Sometimes when the plastids break down the characteristic inclusions are released, disintegrating into a fibrillar material, which no longer can be reliably distinguished from the well known fibrillar component of the sieve tube slime.
-
3.
It is suggested, that the socalled slime bodies, often described in sieve tubes of other angiosperm plants, inTetragonia are modified plastids.
