Summary
The aim of this work is to test the bundle model of polymers using dielectric and mechanical relaxation experiments in polyoxymethylene (POM), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) and polyisobutylene (PIB). At first the simplest defects in the isolated chain molecule, which are consistent with the bundle model, are described. Then the attempt is made to assign certain motions of these defects to some important relaxation processes. Concentrations of these defects are calculated from experimentally determined relaxation strengths (measurements in this institute on PVC and PIB, literature data on POM (14, 16, 17) and PCTFE (27). The results from dielectric and mechanical measurements are compared with each other and with defect concentrations in polyethylene from relaxation data (1, 3, 5) and from a cooperative statistical theory (3, 4). The studied relaxation processes can be assigned with reasonable defect concentrations to the following molecular motions:
Low temperature relaxation in POM and PVC —motion of kinks and kink blocks in the amorphous phase; dielectric main dispersion in PVC —unrestricted motion of kinks and of torsional defects in the chain; low temperature relaxation in PCTFE —motion of helix-band reversal points along the chain; dielectric main dispersion in PIB —unrestricted motion of kinks and kink blocks.
