Abstract
Ecological and physico-ecological problems of the biological productivity are considered in this paper.
The introduction gives a general survey of the problems in production biology. Herewith some remarks to the planned International Biological Program (IBP), Section PT (terrestrial productivity, former A1) are given. The need for such works will be discussed along with the problems within the present and the subsequent paper.
In the 2nd chapter the definitions are given and discussed as far as needed for productivity measurements.
The 3rd chapter deals with growth analysis as a base for productivity measurements. The different working possibilities are illustrated with two examples,Sinapis alba andPhragmites communis. The following different problems are touched: shoot/root ratio, net assimilation rate, the development of chlorophyll content and photosynthetic active surface, ecological efficiency, and caloric values respective of dry matter.
The paper is written in favour of cooperation with the IBP, and has been accumulated from the manuscripts for 16 lectures given by the author since 1961. The opinions and proposals presented here generally agree with those of the IBP official commitees but represent in details the author's opinion only. This statement seems necessary since the author assists none of the mentioned commitees.
