Summary
Refinements have been made to a prototype process for the production of ethanol by extractive fermentation. The process is characterized by thein situ extraction of ethanol from a 7 L continuous stirred tank fermenter and the thermal recovery of ethanol from the extracting solvent, which is circulated in a closed loop through the process. Data are provided to show the efficacy and stability of the process under various operating conditions, and the near complete (>96%) continuous conversion of a 300 g/L glucose feed.
