Abstract
The volatile compounds ofSolanum tuberosum L., a host plant of the Colorado beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, were isolated by successive vacuum steam distillation, freeze concentration, and extraction. The main components aretrans-2-hexen-1-ol, 1-hexanol,cis-3-hexen-1-ol,trans-2-hexenal, and linalool. The distribution of these compounds in a variety of plant families and their biosyntheses are reviewed. These leaf volatiles constitute a general green leaf volatile complex, being active in the olfactory orientation of the Colorado beetle and as such are probably of importance to various phytophagous insects.
