Abstract
Hydroxyapatite reinforced with 20 wt% Al2O3 was sintered at 1200, 1300 and 1400°C. The sintering behaviour was investigated using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Calcium aluminate phases were observed to be produced by the solid-state reaction between Al2O3 and hydroxyapatite. As a hard phase these phases influence the densification of hydroxyapatite with 20 wt% Al2O3 due to different sintering rates between the matrix and calcium aluminate.
