Abstract
The tensile strengths of a particulate-filled rigid polyurethane resin are presented at varying volume fractions and a wide range of particle sizes. These results are compared with exisiting theories of the strength of particulate-filled composite systems. A linear relationship is proposed to exist between the mean particle diameter and the tensile strength at a given volume fraction. A method of normalizing data is presented which removes the stress-concentration effects of finite particle sizes and allows comparison of the data with a simple equation relating tensile strength and volume fraction. The effects of particle size and volume fraction in relation to crack propagation are discussed, and the proposed method of analysis is shown to give similar results when applied to published data.
