Summary
The size of some visual regions and of the grey as well as the white matter of the neocortex is calculated from serial sections through the whole brains of the wild european boar (Sus scrofa scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) and domestic pig (Sus scrofa f. dom.). The degree of reduction in size of these structures from boar to domestic pig is determined by means of intraspecific allometrical methods.
The reductions of the visual nuclei investigated are considerable and range from 31,8% (superior colliculi) to 41,3% (striate area). The optic tract shows a larger decrease (48,9%) than its main terminal region, the geniculate body (38,6%). Since the neocortical white matter is also reduced to a higher degree (44,3%) than the grey matter (34,3%), it seems that during domestication fibres are generally more strongly reduced than their corresponding nuclei.
The reductions observed are interpreted as being due to special environmental changes which are caused by domestication.
