Zusammenfassung
-
1.
Summary
-
1.
10 out of 19 Chlorobium-strains, which were isolated with a vit. B12-containing culture medium from different ponds and lakes in California, Norway, and Germany, proved to be vit. B12-dependent.
-
2.
The chlorophyll content of vit. B12-dependent Chlorobium- and Chromatium-strains was determined in correlation to the vit. B12-concentration of the medium. All Chlorobium-strains tested required for comparable yields about ten times higher vit. B12-concentrations than the Chromatium-strains.
-
3.
The comparison of dry weight and chlorophyll content of a Chlorobium culture in correlation to the vit. B12 concentration of the medium shows, that the chlorophyll content of the cells is strongly reduced in the presence of growth-limiting vit. B12-concentrations.
-
4.
The deficiency characteristics of Chlorobium- and Chromatium-strains under conditions of vit. B12-limitation are described.
-
5.
Vit. B12 could not be replaced neither by increased Co++-concentrations nor by the addition of methionin. The Chromatium-strains were able to utilize all vit. B12-factors tested (III, IV and B), while two of the four Chlorobium-strains studied grow only in the presence of substituted benzimidazole containing cobalamines.
-
6.
The results are discussed in view of the conditions in natural habitats.
