Summary
-
1.
Encysted Aphelidium zoospores penetrate the cell wall of the host, Scenedesmus armatus, and develop an endophytic, amoeboid protoplast which phagocytizes the host cytoplasm. The parasite plasmalemma forms compound membranes with parts of the host plasmalemma. These compound membranes may prevent an outflow of disintegrated host cytoplasm when the host plasmalemma is partly degenerated.
-
2.
Zoospore development and resting spore formation are described and discussed with respect to the identification of the organism.
-
3.
In the cytoplasm of a number of Aphelidium infected Scenedesmus cells rodlike particles (length 35 nm, diameter 10 nm) are found. Their (viral?) nature is discussed.

1.
