Summary
Bacteria capable of growth on pyrazon as a sole carbon source were isolated from soil. Only cobalamin was required as a growth factor in a pyrazonmineral salt medium. Pyrazon is metabolized to the dephenylated compound. The bacteria can grow on antipyrine, pyramidone and pyruvate, too. They do not grow on glucose or other sugars. The bacteria are osmotically sensitive. Growth is not observed in media with the concentration of ingredients exceeding 1%. Possibly, the bacteria belong to the genus Achromobacter.
