Summary
The various phases of the developmental processes of endodyogeny in Frenkelia spec. and schizogony in the coccidia Eimeria tenella from chickens and E. stiedae from rabbits were analyzed with the electron microscope. Endodyogeny and schizogony have been considered as characteristic of Toxoplasmatea and Coccidia, respectively. During endodyogeny in the metrocytes of Frenkelia spec., an eccentric intranuclear spindle appears in the apical portion of the nucleus. Two centrioles are seen in the cytoplasm near each of the tapered nuclear poles. The entire pellicle of the mother cell, with its typical layers, is used in the differentiation of the daughter cells (merozoites). The schizogony of E. tenella and E. stiedae occurs in two developmental phases. In the first, nuclear divisions occur, resulting in the formation of a number of nuclei. This multinucleate condition is terminated with the appearance of fissures which subdivide the schizont into uninucleate pieces, so-called cytomeres, which do not become entirely free. The second phase of development in schizogony is recognizable by the occurrence in each cytomere of endodyogeny, with all of its characteristic phenomena. Only the endodyogeny process, therefore, gives rise to the typical merozoite forms. The hypothesis that endodyogeny is the primary and fundamental process of asexual reproduction in the Coccidia and apparently of all Sporozoa, and that schizogony is a secondary process of reproduction, which has developed from endodyogeny, is proposed.
