Summary
A sexual dimorphism in the olfactory system of mysids is displayed in male-specific sensilla and neuropid areas. The sensilla are found on the first antenna, either on a small appendage, called the lobus masculinus, or on a structure within the peduncle. In both cases there is a muscular arrangement that is involved in the movement of sensilla-bearing parts. Each sensillum is innervated by one sensory cell whose dendrite develops two unbranched outer dendritic segments; due to their morphology a chemoreceptive function is suggested. The afferents from the bipolar sensory cells converge onto a small neuropil area, found in males only. The neuropil is located anteriorly to each of the paired olfactory lobes.
