Summary
Production of cell mass and astaxanthin by the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma was inhibited by saponin. The inhibition was partially reversed by oleic and linoleic acids and by ergosterol and cholesterol, thereby suggesting a possible interference of saponin with the yeast cell membrane.
