Summary
Nitrification of fixed NH4 + in 18 soils representing different agro-climatic regions of West Bengal reveals that 5.5 to 47.9% of fixed NH4 + is nitrified over a 45-day incubation period. Although, nitrification of fixed NH4 + increases with the increase in the incubation period, most of it is nitrified between the 15th and 30th day. When the NH4 +-fixing power of the soil increases the availability of fixed NH4 + to nitrifying bacteria decreases.
