Abstract
Some scholars argue that the developmental challenges faced by African countries are due mostly to the fact that the education systems they inherited from their colonial rulers were not culturally relevant (Prah, 1995). Amongst the flaws in African education systems is the fact that the language of instruction has remained a colonial language such as English, French or Portuguese, which is unfamiliar to the majority of African children when they start formal school. Some African countries still use one of the colonial languages as a language of instruction from the first grade.
