Abstract
I should like to begin with two observations, which will form the basis for this paper.
This paper was written while I was on sabbatical leave from Victoria University of Wellington at the Free University of Amsterdam, with support from the NWO (The Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research). I should like to thank all those institutions for their support, and Geert Booij for his discussion of this topic with me. A version of this paper was presented at a workshop organised by the Sonderforschungsbereich ‘Theorie des Lexikons’ at Wuppertal in September 1995. Many additions have been made in response to reception by that audience and discussion with individual attendees at the conference, whom I should also like to thank for their input. Remaining errors and infelicities are my own.
