Abstract
In what is perhaps his only reference to Berkeley, Leibniz says:
The Irishman who denies the reality of bodies seems neither to offer suitable reasons nor to explain his position sufficiently. I suspect that he belongs to the class of men who want to be known for their paradoxes. (Loemker, 1970, p. 609.)
This paper was stimulated by lectures and papers by Howard Stein; but this does not imply that he would agree with either my approach or my conclusions. I am indebted to Paul Fitzgerald and other members of the audience at the Fifth International Congress of LMPS for several suggestions. I also wish to thank Professor Lawrence Markus for helpful conversations.
