Abstract

On 13 August 1674, Pierre-Daniel Huet was inducted into the French Academy. Then forty-three years of age, he later said that he was a reluctant initiate, perceiving involvement with the Academy as inimical to his scholarly pursuits, and agreeing to join only because of the support of his friends, most notably of Bossuet, with whom he was at that point sousprécepteur to the Dauphin.1
