Abstract
Developing complex forest structures is a new topic in silviculture around the world. Little is known about the influence of forest structure on stand development. Diameter growth is a key factor in this process. Data for our analysis came from a maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait) Intensive Plot Sampling (IPS) located at Coca (central Spain). In order to describe the forest structure of the stand the Clark and Evans index (1954) and von Gadow’s horizontal and vertical differiation indices (Gadow, 1993) have been used. Three to six neighbour trees were evaluated to elaborate the index. A five meter buffer strip has been used.
Individual reduced and full (including structural attributes) diameter growth models have been fitted because these kinds of models are the best approach to characterize stand structure attributes. To calculate spatial distribution index a higher number of trees is needed than to calculate differentiation indices. Regular distribution is positively related to diameter growth while in clumped stands a reduction of diameter growth might be expected. As the differentiation is higher both in diameter and height, the diameter growth is lower. Diameter differentiation has a stronger influence on diameter growth than height differentiation. In developing mixed-structured stands, the economic impact of this growth reduction must be taken into account.
