The Carotid Bodies in a Case of Ventricular Septal Defect

  • Chapter
Chemoreceptors in Respiratory Control

Abstract

Hyperplasia of the carotid bodies occurs in patients with chronic hypoxaemia complicating diseases such as pulmonary emphysema, or systemic hypertension (Heath, Smith and Jago, 1982: Smith, Jago and Heath, 1982). The histological appearances are the same in either situation and comprise a hyperplasia of sustentacular cells with atrophy of the central cores of chief cells in the cell clusters. We described recently a case in which there was a different type of cellular reaction occurring in a woman of 62 with congenital heart disease (Smith, Hurst, Heath and Drewe, 1986). These findings have led us to reconsider the possible function of the dark variant of chief cell.
