Abstract
When animals are farmed intensively, the diseases which are normally present in wild populations become much more evident in the confined farm environment. The stresses associated with farming operations combine with ready transmission of infectious disease in densely stocked populations to produce a situation in which the pathogen is favoured over the host. Given the fact that water is a medium particularly suited for the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms, infectious disease is inevitably a major factor in the success of any fish farming operation.
