Regulation of collagen gene expression

  • Chapter
Liver Growth and Repair

Abstract

The mechanisms responsible for the increased hepatic connective tissue deposition in cirrhosis remain unknown, and there is no established therapy for hepatic fibrosis. Fibrogenesis plays an important role in the accumulation of hepatic connective tissue (Chojkier, 1993). In cirrhotic livers, whatever the etiology, fibrogenesis results in a several-fold increase in collagen content. Collagen types present in normal livers (I, III, IV, V and VI) increase together in hepatic fibrogenesis (Seyer, Hutchenson and Kang, 1977; Rojkind, Rojkind and Cordero-Hernandez, 1983; Clement, Grimaud and Champion, 1986; Martinez-Hernandez, 1986), suggesting a co-ordinated regulation of collagen gene expression.
