Abstract
There are only a few signs and symptoms that indicate salivary gland disease and they are generally non-specific. However, the superficial location of the salivary glands easily permits inspection and palpation so that a thorough physical examination, combined with a detailed history, often provides sufficient information for a clinical diagnosis. Even though there is no substitute for these steps in the diagnostic procedure, there is a tendency, particularly among the inexperienced, to rely more on modern technology than on sensorial observations.
