Summary
The CIAT Rice Program has been breeding rice for blast (Pyricularia grisea Sacc.) resistance at an upland site, characterized by reliable and very high disease levels. Selection has been for both complete and incomplete resistance. Stability of resistance was monitored in a group of locally bred lines and a group of introduced resistant lines during eight seasons. Lines with incomplete resistance shifted to susceptible much more frequently than those initially evaluated as completely resistant. Variation of the pathogen observed suggests that stability of resistance in lines with complete resistance is due to a combination of resistance genes.
